Gardens and Glass Demonstration

Venture beyond downtown Skagway to experience an explosion of flowers, hand-blown glass art. This easy, hour and a half tour is a magical blend for gardeners, art lovers, and model train buffs alike. And you can shop for glass art souvenirs and enjoy a meal fresh from the garden!

Your adventure begins at the site of the historic Henry Clark Farm! Now known as Jewell Gardens, it is the home of Alaska's only Community Supported Agriculture program and the first Certified Organic show garden in the United States.

Giant vegetables and flowers taller than you will delight and inspire your own green thumb endeavors. The garden dazzles with hundreds of tulips and lilacs during the early season, with giant delphiniums in midsummer, and an abundance of flowers and enormous produce during the fall harvest.

Railroad buffs, both young and old, will love the garden railway, a G-Scale model of the White Pass & Yukon Route that winds its way through "Skagwee" and through miniature mountains, forests, tunnels, a waterfall and even a gold mine. The model town looks a lot like Skagway did 100 years ago, and the train chugs by a tent city too! Through tunnels and over wooden trestles, this tiny railway is sure to bring a smile to your face!

Next, get ready to watch the creation of hand-blown glass art in the Garden City Glassworks Theater! Alaska’s newest ”Hot Shop” sits at the base of an impressive rock wall amid the beauty of Jewell Gardens. Watch as inspired glass artists explain the process and demonstrate with dramatic flair. Interact with these outgoing and informative artisans as they magically create pieces of art from molten glass. You’ll learn how this exciting project was inspired by the ”Gardens & Glass” series of installations by renowned Northwest glass artist Dale Chihuly.

The color and organic form of hand-blown glass art is the perfect complement to nature’s own dizzying display of color and form in the Garden. And then you’ll be treated to a guided glass gallery tour of local hand-blown glass.

Finish your visit with time to wander the gardens and browse for souvenirs in the gift shop. Beer & Wine will be available for purchase.
