Get to know unspoiled St. Kitts on this exciting journey as you discover fertile lands of past sugar hilltop estates, hike up to ‘’Sofa Stone’’ surrounded by myriad shades of green rainforest mountains and serene landscapes home to many species of flora and fauna indigenous to the island, topped off with some beach time at South Friar’s.
Set off on any easy pace in your air-conditioned transport with a short tour of 18th century historical Basseterre, a thriving commercial centre with its colonial architecture and many national monuments/ landmarks such as the Clock Tower and Independence Square - once a former slave market.
Your picturesque drive to Monkey Hill takes you through quaint colourful villages with vibrant , rich, volcanic mountain ranges towering in the distance, once home to runaway slaves called ‘’maroons’’. You will travel through Miliken Estate where you will see a windmill, red square bricked chimney (the last of its kind on St. Kitts), the overseer’s house and the Estate Great House and get some insight and understanding of the intricacies of plantation life which was not always seen to be as romantic and elaborate as many people seem to believe. Given an ice cold bottle of water and accompanied by a guide you will hike up a breezy nature trail lined with scented trees of bay rum, cinnamon and mahogany and onto an open grassy meadow where the Sofa Stone rests shaded by mango trees and date palms. The dramatic sweeping views from this hilltop are magnificently awesome as downtown Basseterre, the South East Peninsula, Nevis and on a clear day, the islands of Antigua, St. Maarten and St. Bart’s and the never ending horizon unfolds before your eyes.
You will be served refreshments before you re-board your transport for your scenic drive to the coastal resort area of Frigate Bay where at the top of Timothy Hill Look Out you’ll shoot pictures and marvel at the breathtaking setting of this beauty spot home to the green vervet monkey and peninsula deer.
