St. Catherine's Monastery

You will tour St. Catherine's Monastery, a spectacular historic religious monument.

Reputed to be the world's oldest working monastery, it is located at the base of Mount Sinai. The survival of this impregnable monastery is due to the very high walls and tiny door for entrance. Once within the monastery you will find many alleyways leading to squares including one where the burning bush that Moses received the Ten Commandments from God.

St. Catherine's Monastery is significant to not only to the Greek Orthodox Church but also to Islam. The Prophet Mohammed wrote a decree protecting the monks, this document can be found in the archives as well as many other historic documents. A small mosque can be found inside as well for the passing nomadic Bedouin tribes. Some Bedouins still live within the walls of the monastery to assist the monks who serve the area.
