Due to Newport's important location, sticking-out in The Atlantic Ocean, security has always been a concern by military officials. Fort Adams (named after the Second President of the U.S., John Adams) was built in 1860 for the Army to protect Narragansett Bay (and a portion of the east coast of America). The U.S. Naval Base is one of the oldest in our country and consists of an important Officer's Training Center and War College. It is still a vital part of the Navy and the second-largest employer in this area.
