Caribbean Plantation, Eco-Gardens and Scenic Island Drive

Your driver will unfold the tale of St. Kitts from its early origin beginning with the city’s charming capital Basseterre, with its many restored colonial buildings, thriving commercial centre and national landmarks. Traveling along the Atlantic coast you will see stretches of volcanic black beaches; on a clear day, the islands of St. Maarten and St. Barthelemy; verdant green rainforest mountain ranges; the cloud capped peak of the volcano - Mt. Liamuiga and swaying sugar cane which was once the main industry of the island for 350 years. On route, you will see ruins of old chimneys and windmills dotted along the scenic landscape which remain an important testament to St. Kitts rich and volatile history.
Halfway around the island you will stop at Dieppe Bay to see the ebony volcanic cliffs of Black Rocks. There are restroom facilities at this stop and shopping opportunity for local craft. From here you can also see the Dutch islands of St. Eustatius and Saba and further on, Gibbons Hill where the Atlantic Ocean meets the tranquil, pristine waters of the Caribbean Sea. As your island adventure continues, the historical past of St. Kitts comes alive with Brimstone Hill Fortress - a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the tomb of Sir Thomas Warner, the first Governor of St. Kitts; Bloody Point - where over 2000 Kalinago were massacred in 1626 and Clay Villa Plantation best described as a Kittitian legacy, whose owners are Carib and was the only plantation never to profit from slavery. Your guided tour of fabled Clay Villa comprises of a leisurely stroll through lush, fragrant, delightfully manicured gardens full of fruit and flowers, birds, monkeys, turtles and exotic fish. Admire collections of antiques and other treasures, hand carved furniture, glass art and much more on display throughout the family museum and plantation house. Experience a taste of plantation life past and present and learn about the beliefs and customs of the Kalinago Indians. On completion of the tour take a few minutes to relax and enjoy your complimentary drink, peruse the gift shop and/or make use of the restroom facilities.
Depart Clay Villa for the Port, gently coasting along the islands main road where you will see present and future developments, Universities, the egrets nesting grounds, the Carib Brewery, and the War Memorial - a cenotaph built to recognize the St. Kitts and Nevis descendants of African Slaves that fought in both World Wars.
