Belize The Mayan Ruins of Altun Ha & Belize City Reviews

John Heinsohn -

Me and my wife took the Altun tour on 5/18 with mixed reviews. The ruins itself were incredible and to her credit the tour lady ( I forgot her name ) was very knowledgable in giving this tour. The negatives were intially finding our tour guide in port and also the transport to the ruins ( a not very good working a/c with 8 people ). Our tour guide at the pier also kept waiting for 2 other people to show up delaying our tour start which I wasn't none to pleased with. The ruins tour was excellent My other 2 tours booked thru this tour company went extremely well.

We had 2 great tour guides for this excursion. The hardest part was finding them! When you arrive at the port you need to make your way out of the terminal. It seems like everyone who works in the terminal wants you to stay inside as long as possible. We were consistently given wrong directions out of the terminal, wondering through shops. Once we made our way out, 15 minutes later, there was a man with a sign waiting for us!!! We had Mike as our driver/tour guide during the drive and Jenny who gave the tour at the ruins. We were the only 2 people who signed up for the tour, which was great! We had personal attention the entire time. Mike and Jenny were very informative. They took pictures of us and were very accommodating to our needs. The ruins are about an hour drive from the port. Not much to look at on the drive, and for the last 20 minutes it is 2 way traffic on 1 lane! I was expecting to see more at the ruins. A replica of the jade head would have been interesting instead of a drawing and write up. On the way back, we did a tour of Belize City. Again, not much to see, but Mike and Jenny were informative!

We were greeted with every courtesy and consideration. They were very easy to find when we disembarked our ship. They staff all speak English and are very well trained in their positions. We took this tour and I was very impressed with our tour guide. The roads in Belize are very bumpy and not well maintained. If you have a bad back, it might hurt. There is also a lot of walking and you'll get to climb a couple of the pyramids. Make sure you are in shape for this; it can be a little strenuous.

Loved this excursion! The port is a bit difficult to maneuver through as mentioned in other reviews, but we didn't have any problems. We lucked out big time on our tour: the tour guide, Mike, was fantastic and there were only 4 people on our tour. Plenty of room in the van! Mike was very informative and took some great pics of us on top of the highest pyramid at Altun Ha. Would definitely do this excursion again!
