Antigua

Port: St. Johns

Language: English

Shopping: Limited duty free shopping is available in the Heritage and Redcliff Quay areas. Jewelry, island souvenirs, and hand printed fabrics and clothing are some of the more popular buys.

Port Facilities: Ships generally dock at the relatively new Heritage Quay, located adjacent to the main shopping district. Vessels with an exceptionally deep draft may require docking at the older cruise ship pier which is short 5 minute taxi ride.

Transportation: Mini-buses and cars driven on the left. Taxis are unmetered and prices should be agreed on prior to commencing any travel. We strongly discourage using the public bus system as they are unreliable in their scheduling. Although rental cars are available, roads are generally unmarked and full of potholes making it inconvenient for the one day visitor to get the most out of the day.

Beaches: One of Antigua’s "claims to fame" is the fact that it is an island with 365 beaches, one for every day of the year. Carlisle Bay, Dickenson Bay and Half Moon Bay are all accessible by a short taxi ride (10 min.).

Points of Interest: No trip to Antigua is complete without visiting Lord Nelson’s Dockyard at English Harbor and Shirley Heights. Dow’s Hill Interpretation Center chronicling the island’s history in a multimedia presentation is included on most island excursions. Other points of interest include Clarence House, the ruins of Ft. George, St. Paul’s church near Falmouth
