Barbados

Port: Bridgetown Harbor

Language: English, with British accent

Currency: Barbados Dollar (BDS$) =.50US

Shopping: The principal shopping area is Broad Street, in Bridgetown, although the new terminal building offers a more convenient means of shopping. Stores are usually open weekdays from 8-4 and offer the usual assortment of island merchandise.

Port Facilities: Inside the terminal building you will find a tourist information desk with all the island information available. Inside the terminal you will find the major duty free stores, plus one of the better working systems for dispatching taxis and tours.

Transportation: Vans, cars and buses. Driving is on the left, and rental cars are available in advance, but you will need an International Driving License (available here). Taxis are available to take you anywhere you wish to go. An official list of tariffs is displayed.

Beaches: The west coast has stunning coves and white-sand beaches with calm, clear waters. There are numerous beaches available to the tourist although some facilities charge an entrance fee, such as Carlisle Beach, near the downtown area. Sandy Lane is one of the most beautiful, but is a 20 minute taxi ride. There is a new beach facility close to the ship at the Malibu Rum Factory. While the east coast beaches are beautiful to look at, they are also extremely rough and swimming is not recommended. Beaches here are Sam Lord’s Castle and Crane Beach.

Points of Interest: Bridgetown, The House of Assembly, Legislation Building, St. Michael’s Cathedral and Queen’s Park all surround Trafalgar Square. The most visited point on the island is Harrison’s Cave. Other "must sees" include Francia Plantation, St. John’s Church, the sugar cane fields, a botanical Flower Forest, the Jolly Roger party cruise and the Atlantis Submarine.
