Santiago De Compostela

Santiago De Compostela

Visit the shrine of St. James the Apostle, Spain's patron saint.

The cathedral was one of the three main sites for Christian pilgrimage during the Middle Ages.

The original church was a 12th-century Romanesque building, but additions over the ages have considerably altered the St James Cathedral.

The ornate Obradoiro fa硤e, for example, dates from the 18th-century. The interior is richly decorated.

The Tree of Jesus at the base of the central pillar has been touched by so many hands over the centuries that finger-shaped indentations have been worn into the stone.

Santiago de Compostela is a natural monument. The city features long stone arcades, superb buildings and spacious plazas.

The Plazas del Obradoiro and Platerias are located at two of the four cardinal points of the cross-shaped cathedral.
